MP Markos Kafouros has co-signed a parliamentary question calling for stronger protections for Greece’s tourism businesses against what lawmakers describe as unfair commercial practices by online travel booking platforms.
The initiative, submitted jointly with a group of New Democracy MPs to the Minister of Development and the Minister of Tourism, highlights growing concerns over the operation of digital booking platforms and their impact on hotels and other tourism accommodation providers.
According to the parliamentary question, tourism remains a strategic pillar of the Greek economy and a key driver of growth for the Cyclades. Ensuring that the tourism market operates with transparency and fair competition is considered essential for maintaining the competitiveness of Greek tourism and the long-term sustainability of businesses in the sector.
Among the issues raised are the high commissions charged by online booking platforms, the calculation of commissions on gross prices that include VAT and other taxes, and the use of aggressive advertising strategies and potentially misleading digital practices that may distort market conditions.
Through their parliamentary intervention, the MPs are urging the relevant ministries to examine legislative and regulatory measures that would promote fairer market conditions, drawing on the findings of the Hellenic Competition Commission. The proposed measures aim to improve transparency, strengthen competition, and provide greater protection for Greek tourism enterprises operating in an increasingly digital marketplace.
