October in Mykonos is quieter than the hectic summer months, although occasionally interrupted by massive cruise ships that bring thousands of tourists to the island.

In a single day, last weekend, 21,000 arrivals were spilling from up to six massive liners, temporarily flooding the narrow alleyways of Chora. Despite the record arrivals, there was no overcrowding, and cruise passengers enjoyed a day out on the “island of the winds.”

Yet, October remains a truly wonderful time to visit—provided you are strategic about things. The Aegean’s fierce summer winds have calmed, leaving behind warm, pleasant days and sea temperatures still inviting enough for a late-season swim.

Accommodation prices plummet, and the island’s famous hospitality is delivered with a genuine smile now that the relentless peak season pressure is off. Little Venice is bathed in a golden, mellow light, perfect for photography.

The secret to enjoying Mykonos in the autumn is timing. Embrace the early morning hours, before 10 a.m., when the town belongs to the locals and residents.

Do your sightseeing, shopping, and wandering then. Retreat to a quieter beach or inland village during the mid-day rush (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) when the cruise ship passengers dominate. Return to the port for the stunning late afternoon sunset.

Mykonos in October offers a delightful blend of great weather and lower costs, but remember that tranquility must be earned by navigating the daily high-seas schedule.
